Android: come impostare a livello di codice le dimensioni di un layout

Come parte di un'app Android sto costruendo un set di pulsanti. I pulsanti fanno parte di un set nidificato di LinearLayouts. Usando il peso, il set si ridimensiona automaticamente in base alla dimensione del LinearLayout genitore contenente. L'idea è, in base al numero di pixel e alla densità dello schermo, di impostare la dimensione del layout contenitore su un numero di pixel; e fare in modo che il pulsante impostato si ridimensioni in base a tale modifica.

La domanda quindi è: come ridimensionare il layout.

Ho provato diverse tecniche suggerite e nessuna si avvicina al lavoro. Ecco un sottoinsieme dell'XML che crea il set di pulsanti:

Le due domande sono: 1) come posso accedere a numberPadLayout da Java. E una volta che ho accesso alla vista, 2) come posso modificare l'altezza e la larghezza del layout.
