Ho ereditato un ambiente nameserver con memorizzazione nella cache ad alto volume (Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.8, IBM System x3550) con impostazioni del ring ring incoerenti: 1020 per eth0 e 255 per eth1. eth0 è collegato allo switch 1 del suo datacenter locale, eth1 è collegato allo switch 2 dello stesso. Ogni server nel cluster si alterna tra eth0 o eth1 come interfaccia attiva e ogni cluster si trova in una regione diversa. I buffer di anello ovviamente devono essere resi coerenti.
Ecco dove le cose si complicano: ho scoperto il problema sopra quando ho cercato perché un certo numero di server dei nomi registrasse frequentemente errori "errore invio risposta: disinserito", che la knowledge base dell'ISC suggerisce sia correlata alla congestione in uscita . I server con l'impostazione del buffer dell'anello superiore (1020) rilasciano meno pacchetti su ifconfig (come ci si aspetterebbe), ma tendono a registrare l'errore sopra con grande frequenza, ~ 20k volte al giorno in uno dei miei gruppi di carico più alti. Chiameremo questo '' Gruppo 1 ''. I server con l'impostazione del buffer dell'anello inferiore (255) rilasciano un numero significativamente maggiore di pacchetti in entrata al giorno (di nuovo, previsti), ma presentano molte meno istanze dell'errore BIND, in genere 0-150 nello stesso gruppo di carico.
Neanche un grande mistero qui. La memorizzazione nella cache del DNS è un servizio ricorsivo: se qualcosa non viene memorizzato nella cache, il server deve eseguire più query per conto di quella domanda fino a quando non può finalmente restituire una risposta. È una relazione di query (one in) -> (many out). Riparare i buffer di anello RX dovrebbe far sì che questo numero sia pari a un nuovo valore su tutta la linea, e da lì sarebbe probabilmente una buona idea mettere a punto la coda di rete in uscita del kernel in proc (wmem_max / wmem_default).
Mi piace essere in grado di valutare l'influenza delle modifiche alla configurazione su un problema di prestazioni, quindi ho scritto un rapporto per raccogliere alcuni dati prima di iniziare a apportare modifiche alla produzione. Ecco un esempio dell'output per i primi due server nel Gruppo 1:

La domanda:
Perché group2 si comporta in questo modo senza richiedere ulteriori regolazioni dei buffer di anello RX o net.core.wmem_default

? Ho bisogno di normalizzare i ring buffer, non importa cosa, ma vorrei capire cos'altro sta succedendo qui prima di iniziare a giocare con i valori di wmem in / proc.
L'unica cosa a cui riesco a pensare è che l'applicazione si sta svuotando più rapidamente, ma l'ottimizzazione dello stack di rete non è qualcosa con cui ho una grande esperienza pratica e mi piacerebbe ottenere una seconda opinione. (i miei occhi si posano su alcuni dei contatori di ethtool, non lo nego)
Ho eliminato quanto segue come possibilità. Le prove seguono dopo il divisore.
- Il layout del buffer dell'anello è lo stesso. (il primo server di group1 e group2 ha configurato lo stesso, il secondo server di group1 e group2 hanno configurato lo stesso)
- Il layout del gateway predefinito è lo stesso.
- Le schede di rete sono uguali. (Broadcom BCM5708)
- La versione del firmware riportata da ethtool è la stessa. (bc 4.0.3 ipms 1.6.0)

l'output corrisponde tra i primi server di entrambi i gruppi e i secondi server di entrambi i gruppi. (escluse le sezioni kernel e fs)- Il numero totale di server nel gruppo 1 e nel gruppo 2 è lo stesso. (10)
Per motivi di riservatezza non riesco a mostrare il raw name.conf o il filtro grep che sto usando per escludere informazioni. Dovrai credermi sulla parola che i seguenti parametri di configurazione sono costanti tra tutti e quattro i server:
